ballin

 Greetings everyone,

A typical day in the MTC goes like this. Wake up and hit the basketball courts and teach these kids how to play ball. Literally people have actually started coming the gym just to watch me play and there are so many cameras. But I mean what did you expect, you know? I've played with some college ballers, and they can't do nothin but watch. Then after signing some autographs my companion and I get ready for the day. When we walk around I have to throw on shades and a hat so that I don't get mobbed, but it is what it is.
Some of the funny things that happened this week:
  1. Two Elders in our district have started a barber shop in the bathroom. They cut some kids hair in the district, but now word is spreading and people we don't even know are requesting haircuts.
  2. Some kids down the hall left their door open and 2 of their mattresses were stolen. They were freaking out and everyone was crowding around their room to see it. It was returned by some kids in their district before that night so it's all good, but I bet they will be keeping that door shut from now on.
  3. It was a little strange on Tuesday when all the homies were getting hyped for the devotional. A bunch of 18 and 19 year old kids sitting around the lunch table talking about how hyyyype and fiiirreee this devotional is going to be and so excited because we don't have to go to class that night. Normal teens are bummed when their is a devotional that their parents make them go to, but not us here in the MTC!
  4. I don't exactly remember the context, but in class with one of our teachers asked us how we liked our Spanish teacher and Elder Seals tries to say "ohh ya I love her" typa thing but what he actually said was "Mi amor Hermana Bashford." Which if it's not super obvious means "my love." So that made us all laugh.

Some of the things I learned this week:
  1. During the Sunday devotional we all watched Elder Holland's talk "The First and Greatest Commandment" and it was so powerful. It talks about, um, well, the first commandment. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. If we can do that, everything else will fall into place. They asked us what do we love more than Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father, and what distractions are getting in the way from growing closer to Him?
  2. Although they have been telling us since day 1, it is really hitting home that the best way to teach is with the Spirit. During our practice teachings with each other and fake scenarios, at first I would see it as a joke and just try to teach really simply and explain it all really quickly. But yesterday I decided to take them seriously and try to teach with the Spirit and testify the blessings I have received in my life and it is now my favorite part of class.
  3. During the devotional on Tuesday night one thing that the Spirit was telling me was that because I wear a tag with Jesus Christ's name on it, I need to represent him to the best of my ability and then rely on Him to help me where I fall short. And during the meeting I pictured myself walking the streets of Colombia with my companion and Jesus walking right next to us as a 3rd companion. Super powerful.
Everyone in my district is so fun and there are so many funny moments and jokes that we all just laugh and it has been amazing. I can also feel the Spirit really strongly when I read my BoM and Preach My Gospel.
